INL/AME Alumni Event

INL’s Office of Africa and Middle East Programs hosted its second Alumni Event at the RTC this month. The workshop served as an avenue for discussing best practices and sharing success stories which demonstrate the value of the program. The event brought together over 80 Ghanaian alumni representing over 10 different law enforcement agencies.  

The diversity of agencies represented offered a great platform for networking, collaboration and idea sharing. It was great to welcome agency heads and supervisors who delivered goodwill remarks highlighting the benefits of the RTC training program to their agencies. U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Ambassador Sullivan, opened the event and encouraged participants to leverage the partnerships formed at the RTC in the fight against crime, to make the world a safer place.

One participant from Ghana Prisons Service shared with the alumni community how the RTC training has enhanced his career as a correctional officer.  Based on the knowledge received, he was equipped with the necessary information and motivation on the provision of legal assistance to prison inmates. With the knowledge applied from the course, there has been a reduction in the number of inmates held on expired warrants which has helped to ease congestion in the remand block of the prison.

During the event, we conducted on-the-spot interviews with alumni, where such positive feedback on the training was received. It was great seeing alumni engage in conversations and exchange contacts needed to expand our alumni network.

In a final break-out session, alumni worked together to understand how they can develop their professional relationships and interagency collaborative efforts. Alumni worked in teams to deliver presentations on best practices for alumni engagement, while addressing unique challenges facing the alumni community.

For the RTC it is fulfilling to know the contribution the RTC is making towards building law enforcement capacity in Ghana. Alumni successes further validate our efforts in advancing INL’s training priorities.
