It is always such a pleasure to reunite with our alumni and see them succeed following their RTC participation! We hosted an alumnus of the RTC and ILEA Gaborone, who was a great addition to the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) instructor team, who facilitated the Wildlife Trafficking Investigators Program in August. We would like to highlight our very first such RTC graduate – DSP Musa Danladi.

DSP Danladi works with the Nigerian Police Force, attached to Idiroko Border Security in Ogun State. With about 10 years of law enforcement experience, his duties includes wildlife trafficking crime investigation, small arms trafficking investigation, explosive related crime duties, emergency responses and other general duties  assigned from the Nigeria Police Headquarters.

In August 2018, he was invited to the International Conservation Chiefs Academy (ICCA) in West Virginia for a leadership course on fish and wildlife conservation. He met several people of influence from within the U.S. and West Africa. This enabled him to build professional relationships and maintain contacts with trainees and instructors.

In January 2019, DSP Musa attended the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Small Arms Trafficking Course at the RTC delivered by instructors from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). He expressed great appreciation for the ATF instructors who were very experienced on the subject matter. The hands-on group activities were very effective and led to active participation among the delegates from Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana.

Due to his outstanding work, he was recommended and nominated to be part of the FWS instructor team to deliver the Wildlife Trafficking Investigators course at RTC Ghana in August 2019. The course was centered on how to conduct criminal investigations on poaching and wildlife trafficking. His experience and regional perspective on the various topics were well received by the class. This was seen in the block of instruction he delivered on professional ethics and investigative techniques.

Let’s hear what he had to share with the RTC:

I had a great time working with FWS instructors. We worked as a team and shared our thoughts and experiences before and after every training session. Team spirit and the ability to believe in the abilities of each team member helped build capability. This was a great learning exposure for me. To the RTC alumni community, I will encourage us to make the deliberate effort to practice what we learn at RTC at our places of work. Let’s keep in touch with each other. Remember, it takes a network to break a network!!!
