Financial Crimes Investigation

During the Financial Crime Investigations course in September, we spotted a standout participant who was very interactive and collaborative with his colleagues. We had the opportunity to sit with him in an interview during which he spoke to his RTC experience. Let’s hear what he had to say!

  1. Could you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Mr. Badoo and I work as the Deputy Chief Manager and Head of the Legal and Enforcement Department of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Accra. I have been with SEC since December 2010. My work involves handling all legal issues for and against the commission, including investigations and enforcement.

  1. What is your biggest takeaway from the RTC course you have just completed?

I now have a pool of people I can reach out to in case I need some kind of assistance. Currently, Ghana has no legal regime on Ponzi schemes and pyramid schemes. So, I hope to liaise with the FBI team who will put us in contact with their U.S. counterparts from SEC. The exchange will enable us have knowledge of their legislation and we can draft a policy to suit the Ghanaian system.

  1. How have you benefited personally, as a leader attending the Financial Crime Investigations Course?

Networking is key for me so that's the first benefit. In addition, I have identified new criminal trends that I did not know off, prior to the course, especially the cybercrimes. From the training, we were introduced to useful resources such as various websites that can be used to check people's identity when it comes to issues of enforcement in our market. Additionally, most of the participants were unusually open with information sharing. We were also very open in identifying the lapses in our systems and that enables us to liaise with each other in a more coordinated way.

4. How do you intend to share the knowledge received?

In my office, we have knowledge sections. Usually, after attending training we are made to prepare reports and share with our colleagues. I will work on sharing this knowledge with my unit.

5. We understand this is your first training at the RTC. Can you share your RTC experience with us?

I think it's been a wonderful experience. It’s my first time but the environment was very relaxed so it enabled us to speak freely. I’ve attended several training programs in the U.S. but this environment stimulated collaboration and learning.
